We are rolling through October and while it is still muggy and warm(ish) out the cold weather, snow and ice will be here before we know it. Our winters can be brutal and winterizing the outdoor AC unit is a good way to keep it running great when you do flip it back on again.
Why Winterize the AC
While you may not think the AC needs any additional preparation for the winter, it is a good idea to give it a bit of TLC before you shut it off until next year.
Low temperatures, snow, rain, sleet, ice, wind, and other winter weather can have a serious effect on the outdoor AC unit. Without proper preparation a rough winter could create damage to the unit. Falling ice, piled up snow and wind-blown items can damage the unit. Additionally, animals deciding to take refuge from the cold and setting up their new home in your exterior unit can all pose a problem.
It’s best to get the unit prepped and ready to “hibernate” for the winter.
1. Clean & Inspect the Unit
After being used all summer and sitting out in the hot weather it’s a good idea to clean the unit, clearing it of any dust and debris so nothing will surprise you next spring. If you can, check the condenser and the exposed elements for issues such as rust, cracks or other visible damage. If you notice any issues call for service before closing it up, so it doesn’t get worse over the winter.

2. Clear the Debris
Make sure there are no weeds or leaves or branches surrounding or on top of the unit. Clear away any debris that has blown under/around the unit and make sure trees and bushes are trimmed back, so they won’t hit it in a windstorm and avoid having bushes growing into the unit while it is sitting dormant.
3. Cover the Unit
Using a properly designed AC cover that allows necessary ventilation while still protecting the unit is a good idea. This will prevent anything from falling into the unit or getting blown into the unit.
Keep an Eye on It
It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the unit over the winter. Make sure nothing has fallen into it and that no critters have decided to set up their new home in your AC. It’s also a good idea to keep snow from piling up on top of the unit, creating unnecessary weight.
